I have some old stuff around that have 16 bit 1.1.1 firmware, but no gui to program them. Any idea how to get the old gui code, or tweak the new to accept the 1.1.1? I suspect the protocol hasn't changed?

What if you manually specify the boot loader size and placement on the advanced tab?
