No I haven't used a K22.
Ok, interesting.

Is still think you should use an oscilloscope to point the problem out:
verify oscillator frequency
verify PIC tx baud rate
verify rx baud rate on PIC rx pin

You could also add constant transmit in the firmware to verify PIC tx using the terminal in ds30 Loader.
